Brits and Shemaine Campbelle broke the back of a 70-run chase after rain cut the Playoff to eight overs a side at Kensington Oval.

Guyana Amazon Warriors celebrate their WCPL Playoff win over Barbados Tridents at Kensington Oval

In brief

Warriors knock out the champions in a rain-shortened Playoff

  • Rain delayed the start at Kensington Oval and cut the WCPL Playoff to eight overs per side.
  • Barbados Tridents reached 69 for 4, with Maddy Green unbeaten on 30 from 16 balls.
  • Tazmin Brits finished 35 not out as the Warriors won by seven wickets with four balls to spare.

Rain cuts the WCPL Playoff to eight overs

Overnight rain and more showers in the morning delayed the start of the Limacol WCPL Playoff at the Kensington Oval, and when play finally began the match had been cut to eight overs per side. Chloe Tryon won the toss, chose to bowl, and the decision shaped a short, frantic contest against the defending champions.

Barbados Tridents never really got moving. Qiana Joseph struggled against the pace of Shabnim Ismail and Shamilia Connell and was tactically retired after making 3 from 12 balls. Hayley Matthews cut her first ball for four but was run out in the sixth over chasing a second run that was not there, and it took Maddy Green's unbeaten 30 from 16 balls to carry the Tridents to 69 for 4. Erin Burns kept things tight for the Guyana Amazon Warriors, taking 1 for 11 from her two overs.

Brits and Campbelle break the chase

The Warriors lost Eboni Brathwaite in the first over of the chase, top-edging Shawnisha Hector, but Shemaine Campbelle came in swinging. She hit 22 from 12 balls and, with Tazmin Brits, added 51 from 27 balls for the second wicket to take the game away from the Tridents.

Qiana Joseph had Campbelle caught behind for 22 with the score on 54 for 2 at the end of the fifth over, but the hard work was done. Brits stayed calm at the other end and finished unbeaten on 35 from 23 balls, an innings that earned her Player of the Match.

Tryon finishes it after a final-over wobble

One run was needed from the last over when Suzie Bates yorked Nadine de Klerk with the first ball, suddenly giving the Barbados Tridents a glimmer of hope. Captain Chloe Tryon ended it with the next delivery, hitting over midwicket to seal a seven-wicket win with four balls to spare.

The result ends the Tridents' title defence and guarantees new WCPL champions this season. The Warriors now meet Trinbago Knight Riders in Thursday's final at the same ground, one win away from their first WCPL crown, having also beaten the Tridents in the final group game on Sunday.
