In brief

Warriors chase 159 to break their Tridents duck

  • Barbados Tridents made 158 for 7, led by Hayley Matthews' season-best 50 and 38 from Kiran Navgire.
  • Tazmin Brits anchored the reply with 46 as the Warriors reached their target with an over to spare.
  • The win was the Warriors' first over the Tridents in WCPL history; both sides meet again in Wednesday's Playoff.

Matthews fifty sets up a stiff WCPL target

The Barbados Tridents posted 158 for 7 in the final Limacol WCPL group match at the Kensington Oval on Sunday afternoon, a total built around their captain. Hayley Matthews made her highest score of the season, an even 50, and shared a 63-run partnership for the second wicket with Kiran Navgire, who added 38 at number three.

Suzie Bates then gave the innings its late push, smashing an unbeaten 22 from just 11 balls. For the Guyana Amazon Warriors, off-spinner Sheneta Grimmond was the pick of the bowlers with 3 for 21, while Erin Burns supported her well with 2 for 19 in a disciplined display.

Brits anchors the biggest chase of the WCPL season

The chase of 159 was the highest successful run chase of the WCPL season, and the Warriors' top order all kept the rate up. Opener Tazmin Brits anchored the innings with a composed 46 and was named Player of the Match, with Eboni Brathwaite making 22, Nadine de Klerk 20 and Shemaine Campbelle 36, each of them scoring at better than a run a ball.

Spinners Afy Fletcher and Matthews combined for 3 for 45 from their eight overs and stayed effective for the Tridents, but seamer Cherry-Ann Fraser proved expensive, conceding 46 runs from her three overs. The Warriors reached their target for the loss of five wickets with an over to spare.

Same teams meet again in Wednesday's Playoff

Both teams came into this final league match hoping to win by a big enough margin to jump above table-toppers Trinbago Knight Riders. Neither could do it, so the Knight Riders go straight to the final and the other two places are settled: the Warriors and Tridents both reach the Playoff, and Jamaica Empress are eliminated.

The two sides meet again at Kensington Oval on Wednesday at 10am, with the winner advancing to face the Knight Riders in the final the following day. The rematch is covered in the WCPL Playoff report, and the full fixture list is on the CPL schedule.
