The Sobers family have backed the naming of the player inductee's trophy, which Dwayne Bravo will receive first in Barbados.

  • The CPL Hall of Fame player trophy will be named the Sir Garry Sobers Award.
  • It will be presented for the first time at the Hall of Fame Gala Dinner on 15 September 2026 at the Hilton Barbados.
  • The gala supports the Sir Clive Lloyd Healthcare Foundation's prostate cancer awareness and testing work.

Sir Garry Sobers Award will honour each CPL 2026 Hall of Fame player

The trophy handed to the player inducted into the CPL Hall of Fame each year will carry the name of Sir Garry Sobers, the league confirmed on 7 September. Sobers is widely regarded as the finest all-rounder West Indies cricket has produced, and the league has secured his family's support for putting his name on the award. The naming builds on the launch of the CPL Hall of Fame earlier this season.

The Hall of Fame takes in two inductees a year, one player and one contributor from off the field. Dwayne Bravo and Ian Bishop were named as the first class in August, as covered in our report on Bravo and Bishop's induction, so Bravo will be the first man to lift a trophy bearing Sobers' name.

First presentation set for the Barbados gala dinner

The Sir Garry Sobers Award will be presented for the first time at the Hall of Fame Gala Dinner on Tuesday 15 September 2026 at the Hilton Barbados. The evening raises money for the Sir Clive Lloyd Healthcare Foundation and its work on prostate cancer awareness, testing and early detection across the Caribbean.

That puts two of the most respected names in West Indies cricket on the same night: Sobers on the trophy and Lloyd behind the cause it supports. The gala falls in finals week in Barbados, between the playoff matches listed on the CPL 2026 schedule.

Russell: the name gives the trophy real weight

CPL chief executive Pete Russell described Sobers as "the greatest all-rounder the game has ever seen" and thanked the Sobers family for trusting the league with his name and legacy. He said the naming gave the trophy, and the Hall of Fame itself, a standing that inducted players would carry with pride.

Russell added that presenting the award for the first time at a dinner supporting Sir Clive Lloyd's foundation made 15 September an even bigger night for West Indies cricket. Supporters who want a place at the gala can contact the league for booking details, and the wider story of the tournament is traced in our CPL history guide.
